MYTHS
OF HOME OWNERSHIP
Currently, HOP, partnering with
HUD, MFA and other related housing entities,
works to dispel myths concerning
homeownership. SER has gained widespread
community recognition for its progressive
approach to promoting homeownership! The SER
Homeownership Program Director leads his team of
homeownership counselors in the fight to provide
the truth and dispelling the generally accepted
myths about homeownership:
The
Myths:
-
Only families with
substantial down payment and closing costs/
funds purchase homes;
-
Only families with long
established and excellent traditional credit
qualify for a mortgage;
-
Bad credit history and/or
bankruptcy will follow you for years and
disqualify you from getting a mortgage.
The Truth:
-
Some programs exist
specifically for low to moderate income
individuals and families that do not require
down payment and closing cost;
-
Persons with little or no
traditional credit can qualify for a
mortgage, using nontraditional credit such
as rental and utility payment histories;
Bad credit and/or bankruptcy are
problems which can be overcome within a
reasonable time (2-3 years).
